The news is as expected on free agent Antonio McDyess. The Celtics made their pitch and the big man let it slide on by. The early word after his trade from Detroit to Denver was that McDyess would take a buyout and return to the Pistons, and that is looking even more certain now.

The Charlotte Bobcats waived little-used forwards Andre Brown and Linton Johnson and were on the verge of signing center Dwayne Jones on Wednesday. The Bobcats were also one of several teams pursuing forward Antonio McDyess as the Bobcats look for ways to boost a thin front line. GM Rod Higgins said the 6 foot 11 Jones would likely sign on Thursday.

It seems the team that makes the loudest noise in a possible Antonio McDyess lottery is the Boston Celtics, but only maybe one of those other teams with McDyess on the board is the Orlando Magic, kind of, sort of, maybe. Asked if Orlando was one of those clubs that had reached out to McDyess' agent, Magic GM Otis Smith quickly shrugged off the possibility, indirectly citing how any such trade or deal set up to accommodate what is left on his contract would rub up against the luxury tax.

The Celtics, like every other contender, were intrigued by Monday's trade that sent Allen Iverson from Denver to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb. However, the C's attention is focused particularly on the Denver side of the deal, with McDyess supposedly set to be bought out of his contract. According to a league source, the Celtics would be especially interested in bringing in the veteran power forward. The C's initially attempted to sign McDyess in 2004.

Detroit guard Allen Iverson was not available for Wednesday's game against Toronto because Chauncey Billups, one of 3 players traded to Denver in exchange for Iverson, has not completed his physical with the Nuggets. Rodney Stuckey started for the Pistons, who also sent top reserve Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb to Denver in Monday's trade.

Bryan Colangelo can be excused if he feels like everyone is trying to buy his date a drink. Except his date is Chris Bosh, the NBA equivalent of the cute girl with good grades who goes away for the summer, in this case, the Beijing Olympic Games, gets a new hairstyle and turns into a basketball bombshell. That is the subtext to yesterday's blockbuster trade that sent Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess from the Pistons to the Nuggets for Allen Iverson.

The Pistons open training camp in 13 days, and for the 1st time in several years, the camp will feature an honest to goodness battle for one of the 5 starting positions. First year coach Michael Curry will have given Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell and Kwame Brown a legitimate and fair shot at unseating veteran Antonio McDyess as the starting power forward-center opposite Rasheed Wallace.
