The Detroit Pistons traded Chauncey Billups because they believed Rodney Stuckey was ready to become a big contributor. Last night, he showed they were right. Stuckey scored a career-high 40 points on Tuesday to help the Pistons overcome an injury to Allen Iverson in a 104-98 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

The Nuggets went 50-32 last season in Allen Iverson's only full year with the team. But they were quickly dispatched in the first round of the playoffs by the Lakers. The thinking from Nuggets brass was a top point guard was needed to better distribute the ball, including to rising star Nene, who wasn't getting a lot of touches at center, and that the 6-foot-3 Chauncey Billups would provide more of a defensive presence than the 6-foot Iverson. "Chauncey guards. Iverson doesn't," said Clippers assistant Kim Hughes, an assistant during Billups' previous Nuggets stint of 1998-2000. "Chauncey's a big guard, so you don't need to help him out in the low post."

Chauncey Billups made big shots and the Nuggets got a lot of key stops. Billups scored 22 points, Carmelo Anthony added 21 and the surging Nuggets cruised to a 91-81 win on Wednesday night over the injury-riddled San Antonio Spurs.

Unquestionably, the Allen Iverson experiment produced some scintillating moments for the Nuggets and their fans. However, the more Nuggets coach George Karl watches Chauncey Billups run his offense, and watches Iverson lead the Pistons, it has become clearer that Iverson was not the answer. "There are less bad plays, more solid plays", Karl said of the former 76er, who was traded earlier this month. "I think the wasteful, cheap possessions that we used to have 10 to 15 a game, they do not exist very much anymore."

If Chauncey Billups had known that he would be traded a year later, would he have re-signed with the Pistons? "No way", he said. "No way. I do not think anybody would. If anybody informed you that if hindsight was 20/20 and they knew a year later they were going to get traded from the place that they signed, they would not sign". When the Pistons were wooing Billups, they talked about putting down roots in the community. Billups won the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2008 for his charity work. His Porter-Billups Leadership Academy helps prepare at risk kids in his hometown of Denver for college, and he intended to extend the academy to Detroit. He also ran a charity golf tournament in Michigan and would like to invest his millions in the area, like former Pistons guards Dave Bing and Joe Dumars.

The Nuggets are 4-1 since Billups' arrived after a November 3 trade with the Pistons. And on Friday night, the Nuggets added a statement game to their resume, beating the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics 94-85.

Chauncey Billups flew to Charlotte a week ago, only to have his life dramatically altered before he even got on the court. 9 days later he was back in town, leading a new team to another win and making the early returns of that blockbuster trade quite positive for the Nuggets.

The move was expected as Denver tries to cut costs. McDyess' agent, Andy Miller, had said the chances of him playing for the Nuggets were "very low to zero.

Chauncey Billups is learning on the job. Meanwhile, the Nuggets keep winning. Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points, Billups had 16 points and 10 assists and the Nuggets beat the Memphis Grizzlies 100-90 on Sunday night. Billups, who came to Denver last week in a deal that sent Allen Iverson to the Pistons, said he's still getting used to his new teammates.

The hometown kid had quite the homecoming, with a little assistance from Carmelo Anthony. Chauncey Billups made a triumphant return to the Nuggets with 15 points, Anthony scored 28 and Denver beat the Mavericks 108-105 on Friday night. Billups also had 3 assists and 3 steals, including 2 down the stretch.
