The Cavaliers tried to work a sign and trade with Chicago for Luol Deng, however the Bulls decided to keep him to the tune of $71 million over 6 years. They'd rather have Deng (both the Cavaliers and Bulls) than restricted free agent Ben Gordon, who would like a Deng-type deal.

According to a league source, the Bulls have interest in Brad Miller (and lots of others) and are shopping forward Andres Nocioni (four years, $29 million left with team option for the 2012-13 at $7.5 million) and point guard Kirk Hinrich (five seasons left for combined $44.5 million). They appear very motivated to do a deal of some kind now that the Luol Deng situation was resolved.

The Chicago Bulls drafted their point guard of the future last month and now they have locked up their best player, signing versatile forward Luol Deng to a long term extension. "Obviously we are incredibly happy to get Luol signed", GM John Paxson mentioned at a news conference Thursday announcing the 6 year contract.

Nuggets rookie Sonny Weems had surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia. Weems, a 2nd round pick who was acquired by the Nuggets on draft night, expects to fully recover in time for the start of training camp on September 30. The Chicago Bulls picked Weems 39th overall out of Arkansas, then traded him to the Nuggets for a 2009 2nd round pick.

GM John Paxson will confirm Wednesday that the Bulls have reached agreement on a 6 year deal with restricted free agent Luol Deng. The deal is worth a guaranteed $71 million, as stated by sources. Incentives would push the contract's value to $80 million, sources said.

Ben Gordon will not set any artificial deadlines to get a new deal done. A restricted free agent, he would sign a one year tender offer from the Bulls and then become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Bulls rookie Derrick Rose has chosen the stripes of adidas over the swoosh of Nike, agreeing in principle to his 1st shoe deal. Adidas wasted no time bringing Rose into the fold, doing a photo shoot with him whilst he was in L.A attending the ESPY Awards.

The Bulls and Luol Deng's representative continue to negotiate and occasionally make progress toward a long term extension, which is noteworthy thinking about this, Deng would have been Josh Childress.

If the Bulls would like to sign Luol Deng to a contract extension, they have weeks, not months, to do so. Though the official deadline to reached an extension is not until October 31, Deng's camp has made clear to the Bulls that negotiations will not continue past the forward's early-August commitment to Britain's national team.
