A league insider with knowledge of the Pistons' thinking told me that Detroit went ahead with the Allen Iverson trade knowing full well that the eight-time All-Star had lost a step. "They didn't care," the insider said. "They made the deal strictly for the cap relief" after the season, when Iverson's $20.8 million salary comes off the books. Detroit is 7-9 since Iverson joined the lineup Nov. 7. Its defense, the backbone of the team that has made six consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference finals, has been average at best. In a 104-92 loss to the Knicks last Sunday in New York, Iverson and Rasheed Wallace struggled mightily to defend the pick-and-roll combination of David Lee (12 points, 19 rebounds) and Chris Duhon (25 points, nine assists). Tayshaun Prince was frequently seen explaining defensive rotations to his teammates during breaks in the action.

The more Chris Duhon drove by them in the third quarter, the more the Portland Trail Blazers knew the fourth would be theirs. And it was Rudy Fernandez, Joel Przybilla and the rest of the Blazers' deep bench that won it for them. Brandon Roy scored 23 points, and Portland dominated the fourth quarter to beat the tiring New York Knicks 104-97 Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.

The locker-room revolt against Stephon Marbury became official on Wednesday night when Quentin Richardson criticized the veteran point guard for refusing to play against the Pistons and saying of Marbury, "I do not look at him as a teammate". Marbury declined to play in a 110-96 loss to the Pistons despite the Knicks only having 2 healthy guards, Chris Duhon and Anthony Roberson.

Stephon Marbury is willing to be a backup to Chris Duhon, mainly because he does not have a said in the matter. However, Marbury made it clear last night that he thinks he is still a starting point guard. "I always desired to start", he said.

Sounding unusually contrite and un-Starbury-like, Stephon Marbury mentioned last night he will be happy to come off the bench this season and promised he will not cause a "distraction" if Chris Duhon is named the starting point guard.

Most of the Knicks' top rotation players from last season were scrimmaging at the team's training center. The group has included Jamal Crawford, Eddy Curry, David Lee, Nate Robinson, Jared Jeffries, Wilson Chandler and Zach Randolph, as well as the free agent pickup Chris Duhon. The most notable absence was Stephon Marbury, who expects to be waived before the season.

On the day Donnie Walsh welcomed Chris Duhon to the Knicks at a Garden press gathering, the team president did not said the magic words, that Stephon Marbury will be a member of the Knicks this season.

Chris Duhon is coming to compete for the New York Knicks' starting point guard job. Nobody is saying yet if that competition will be against Stephon Marbury. Duhon signed a 2 year deal Wednesday worth more than $11 million, choosing the Knicks over the Orlando Magic due to an opportunity to play in new coach Mike D'Antoni's system, perhaps as the starter.

Whilst the Knicks continue to wait for Chris Duhon to accept or reject their offer, another interesting scenario is starting to surface involving Monta Ellis, the dynamic young guard for the Golden State Warriors. Ellis, 22, a restricted free agent, is starting to draw a good deal of attention in several sign and trade scenarios.

The Heat expressed interest in several free agent point guards Tuesday, that included Sebastian Telfair (unrestricted after Minnesota declined to tender him) and Tyronn Lue. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, the Heat had not called about Baron Davis (who would like far more than Miami's $6 million mid level or Chris Duhon.
