The Suns need to sign 3 players to reached the 13 man roster minimum. The priority was to land a veteran point guard before signing a wing and a big man. Phoenix will pursue Sam Cassell, Damon Stoudamire or Jason Williams to be its backup point and Carlos Arroyo if he fell to minimum-contract status.

Damon Stoudamire is 34 years old, an age that puts him closer to being an NBA senior citizen than a senior in high school. One day last week, however, he experienced a full-fledged teenage flashback. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, not really recreating a recruiting trek from his days at Pomona-Pitzer College, flew halfway across the country and back Wednesday, from Seattle to Memphis to Phoenix.

The Spurs have lost 3 games in a row, however they scored an off the court win Wednesday when veteran point guard Damon Stoudamire decided he signed with the Spurs as soon as he officially clears waivers Thursday morning. Several other top tier teams, that included the Suns, Boston Celtics, Nuggets and Toronto Raptors, had expressed interest Stoudamire.

Point guard Damon Stoudamire plans to sign with the San Antonio Spurs Thursday, giving the defending champions another veteran option whilst Tony Parker nurses a left heel injury. Stoudamire negotiated a buyout with Memphis earlier this week after falling behind 2 young players in the rotation.

Defending world champion San Antonio appears to be the front runner in the Damon Stoudamire sweepstakes. The veteran point guard was let go by the Grizzlies after the 2 parties agreed to the terms of a buyout. The Celtics, Raptors and Suns all have interest in Stoudamire, who will be an unrestricted free agent today assuming he clears waivers as expected.

The Mavericks like the team as currently constituted. However, had Devin Harris' absence been longer, they could were inclined to explore options, such as, Earl Boykins, Sam Cassell or Damon Stoudamire. New Jersey's Jason Kidd is rumored to be on the trading block, however it is thought the Mavericks are not interested due to the heavy price.

The Celtics appear to be taking their time on Damon Stoudamire. At their current rate, the Celts could run out of time. According to league sources, the Celts are checking out other possibilities and it is thought they could have interest in another player, thought to be Sam Cassell of the Clippers.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies waived veteran point guard Damon Stoudamire Monday and plan to release him if he clears waivers. The move, said before Monday night's game against the Mavericks, was expects for weeks.
