Danny Granger took a major step in his evolution into a team leader with his fourth-quarter effort against Golden State. The Indiana forward scored 41 points in the Pacers' 127-120 victory on Wednesday night. Most important, he scored 13 points in the final 6 1/2 minutes to carry his short-handed team. "He's an incredible player," Golden State coach Don Nelson said.

A 15-point second-half lead had turned into a tie game before the end of the third quarter, and the six-game losing streak was starting to weigh on the mind of at least one Indiana Pacer. But forward Danny Granger put any doubt out of his mind after coach Jim O'Brien issued a simple directive, which led to the Pacers pulling away for a 118-98 win against the Washington Wizards on Monday night.

With only a quarter of the season completed, it may be a little early to start looking at end-of-the-season awards. But it's certainly not too early to start making people sit up and take notice. That's what the Cavaliers are doing defensively as a team, and what LeBron James is doing defensively as an individual. He may have more blocked shots among ESPN's "Top 10 Plays" this season than slams. It is not entirely coincidental that James needs just one steal to break Mark Price's record and become the team's all-time leader in that category. The way the Cavs are playing defensively this season is giving him more freedom to gamble, and he's taking full advantage. Though clearly known more for his offensive exploits, James has been working hard to improve his defense the past few seasons and has often volunteered to guard the opponent's best player, like Indiana's Danny Granger.

Troy Murphy and Danny Granger spent most of Tuesday night working to keep the Pacers close to the Lakers. They spent those final few seconds like everyone else in Conseco Fieldhouse, watching, waiting and wondering if Murphy's tantalizing tip would actually drop through the net. It did - just as the buzzer sounded.

The Pacers had blown 2nd half leads in 3 straight games, but they were the ones who mounted the comeback in Houston on Wednesday night. Danny Granger tipped in his own miss with 13 seconds left and the Pacers rallied from 10 points down in the 4th quarter to beat the Rockets 91-90.

The Pacers could not have scripted it better. Pacers president Larry Bird brought in 7 new players in the offseason to improve the team's skill level and overhaul its image after numerous off the court incidents the past several years. The payoff was immediate with Danny Granger scored 20 points.

Jeff Foster finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds, and T.J. Ford and Jarrett Jack each scored 10 for Indiana, which evened its preseason record at 2-2.

Danny Granger, who is going into his 4th year, is still in his rookie contract. The Pacers can sign him to an extension at any time between now and the end of October. If not, he will be a restricted free agent next summer.

Indiana forward Danny Granger was scoreboard watching. When he did not like what he saw, he stepped up his game. Granger scored 15 of his 30 points in the 3rd quarter as the Pacers kept their slim Eastern Conference playoff expects alive with an 85-76 triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers Friday.
