The Nuggets re-signed restricted free agent J.R. Smith to a multiyear contract Friday. The 22 year old guard averaged 12.6 points for the Nuggets over the past 2 seasons. He shot nearly 40 percent from 3 point range, the best percentage in team history for players with at least 100 3 pointers.

In 2 seasons with the run and gun Nuggets, swingman Yakhouba Diawara struggled to find his position behind Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony. Now in Miami, Diawara expects for a better opportunity to complement Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion.

Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony will be able to take part in opening night festivities at the Pepsi Center. According to a number of sources within the NBA, the Nuggets will start the 2008/2009 season with 2 Western Conference road games, that included the opener against the defending Northwest Division champion Jazz.

Nuggets rookie Sonny Weems had surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia. Weems, a 2nd round pick who was acquired by the Nuggets on draft night, expects to fully recover in time for the start of training camp on September 30. The Chicago Bulls picked Weems 39th overall out of Arkansas, then traded him to the Nuggets for a 2009 2nd round pick.

The Knicks and Nuggets are discussing a trade that would send 2006 1st round pick Renaldo Balkman to Denver for point guard Taurean Green and small forward Bobby Jones, an NBA front office source informed last night.

The Nuggets acquired forward Renaldo Balkman from the New York Knicks Monday for guard Taurean Green, forward Bobby Jones and a 2nd round draft pick in 2010. The Nuggets also get cash in the deal said by Mark Warkentien, Denver's vice president of basketball operations.

The Nuggets brought back Chris Andersen, signing the frontcourt player known as "Birdman" Thursday. Andersen was reinstated by the NBA in early March after being kicked out on January 27, 2006, for violating the league's drug policy. The 6 foot 10, 228 pound Andersen played in 5 games for the New Orleans Hornets last season, averaging 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds a game.
