The Mavericks re-signed forward Devean George Monday, nearly 6 months after the veteran player blocked a trade to the New Jersey Nets. George played his 1st 7 seasons for the LA Lakers before signing with the Mavericks in 2006. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

You can debate whether the return of Devean George makes the Mavericks better. There is no question, however, that Mark Cuban's readiness to put his grudge with George's agent aside to get the deal done is a good sign. Cuban made no secret of his displeasure with Mark Bartelstein after George blocked the original Jason Kidd trade based on his advice.

David Stern must be mortified at what happened Wednesday and what he's hearing from Jerry Stackhouse. Shortly before the stunning news of Devean George's declaration got out (no league conference call had taken place, so the trade was not official) a giddy Stackhouse was quoted at length concerning his contract buyout by the Nets; he mentioned he was looking forward to 30 days of rest and then he would be back in Dallas.

Nets president Rod Thorn mentioned Friday he has no side deal with Mavericks swingman Jerry Stackhouse, an illegal arrangement that would put a possible Jason Kidd to Dallas trade in jeopardy. The Nets thought they had worked out a deal with the Mavericks Wednesday that could have sent Kidd to Dallas, however the trade is on hold because Devean George exercised his right to block it.

Devean George, one of the other players in the Mavericks-Nets deal, and his agent elected to use a clause in his contract to block the trade. George could have had to give up his early Larry Bird rights, which in essence means he could have given up leverage in in the summer's free agent period, for the trade to go through.

Devean George won 3 rings playing alongside Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. He joined the Mavericks before last season thinking he might add to his collection playing alongside Dirk Nowitzki. Now the Mavericks have a chance to get Jason Kidd, as well. George might be pretty excited, if he was not among the players being offered for the superstar point guard.

Devean George missed pregame shooting Wednesday night because he was talking to his agent about whether to accept a trade that would've brought Jason Kidd to the Mavericks. The Mavericks probably wish he would taken the game off to think about it some more.

Devean George, injured entering the season and mostly buried on the Mavericks bench since, mentioned he's open to a trade in order to jump start his disappointing season. George mentioned before Sunday's game against the Pistons that, if his position remains limited, he would like the chance to play elsewhere in hopes of increasing his stock as an unrestricted free agent after the season.

A deal that makes sense for 2 teams is Jason Kidd to the Mavericks. To make the salaries match, the Mavericks would offer Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Juwan Howard and Devean George.
