The Dallas Mavericks are good at finishing. Now they must figure out how to get off to better starts. Dirk Nowitzki had a 16-point fourth quarter and scored 31 points, Jason Terry added 21 and the Mavericks rallied from another deficit for a 96-86 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.

Dirk Nowitzki isn't happy about the way the NBA handled his suspension. And he shouldn't be. But the best news out of the incident against the Jazz last week is that the Mavericks' superstar is learning that he'll have to be more disciplined on future trips to Utah. Nowitzki talked for the first time about the suspension that came after his back-hand swing at Utah's Matt Harpring on Friday. "I was disappointed they didn't tell me Saturday," he said. "Their excuse was the investigation took all day. I don't buy that. I think they should have told me Saturday." Nowitzki said it's more than just a coincidence that he's been suspended for actions in each of his last two trips to Utah.

Dirk Nowitzki is keeping all options open for his future, including the possibility of taking less money in 2010 to facilitate the Mavericks acquiring a marquee player or players in that summer's bountiful free-agent market. While adamant that he will not allow himself or the Mavericks to give up on the next two seasons, Nowitzki said he's aware of how brim-full the free-agent pool will be in 2010. "Every team is trying to be a player in 2010," he said. "Every team is trying to clear money under the cap so they can make a move. I'm very fortunate that I've made a lot of money in this league, even though I've never really played for money. I love the sport. I love this organization. Obviously, I want to win. I won the MVP, and individually, there's nothing really left but winning a championship. If that means I have to play for less money, it's all possible. It's all open."

The Dallas Mavericks don't need their 'A' game to beat the Memphis Grizzlies. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points, Jason Terry added 17, and the Mavericks stretched their winning streak against the Grizzlies to 13 games with a 100-82 victory on Tuesday night. Josh Howard added 14 points, and Erick Dampier contributed 13 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks, who have won 14 of 18.

Down by 12 points after one quarter, the Dallas Mavericks knew better than to panic. Instead, they waited for the struggling Toronto Raptors to crack. It didn't take long. Dirk Nowitzki had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and Jason Terry also scored 27 points in the Mavericks' 96-86 victory over the Raptors on Wednesday night.

Dirk Nowitzki had one of the best scoring nights of his career, Jason Terry put up another 20-point game and the Dallas Mavericks shot better than 50 percent from the floor. Despite those performances, the Mavericks still needed a late rally to fend off the struggling Oklahoma City Thunder.

The acquisition of Jason Richardson crammed a lot of excitement into a small visitors locker room that the Suns inhabited for their Staples Center visit Wednesday night. But excuse Steve Nash if he can't share the glee. It cost him his best friend, Raja Bell. Just like Nash was separated from Dirk Nowitzki by Dallas owner Mark Cuban's unwillingness to match a Suns offer in 2004, Nash has been split from his basketball buddy again by a basketball decision. The Suns traded Bell, Boris Diaw and Sean Singletary on Wednesday to Charlotte for Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley and a second-round draft pick. Before Nash said a word about how he felt about the trade, his flat play with a dead expression said it all during the Suns' shorthanded 115-110 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. "It's tough," Nash said after a big exhale. "While I'll welcome my new teammates with open arms, it's tough when you lose your best friend. It's tough when you lose two of your best buddies. It's tough and it hurts. It's tough."

Yeah, the Heat will have some money in 2010. The goal is to have enough to sign two players to maximum contracts. Of course, one of those players would be Dwyane Wade. Ideally, the other would be one of those high-profile free agents (LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, Joe Johnson, or someone of similar status). Basically, you'd have two players eating up about $40 million and the other 13 players splitting up the remaining money, maybe $30 or $35 million, and that would take the Heat to the luxury-tax threshold.

Maybe it was facing buddy Steve Nash. Maybe it was having two point guards in the starting lineup. Maybe it was the way Phoenix kept switching defenders against him without ever finding a stopper. Something put Dirk Nowitzki into quite the scoring mood.

The Mavericks were missing No.2 scorer Josh Howard, and Dirk Nowitzki was getting extra attention from Indiana's defense. So Jason Terry and Jason Kidd came to the rescue. Terry scored 16 of his 29 points in the 4th quarter and Kidd hit a pair of key 3 pointers to help the Mavericks rally from a 13 point 2nd half deficit for a 109-106 win over the Pacers on Tuesday night.
