A little more than two weeks after acquiring Boris Diaw and Raja Bell from the Phoenix Suns, the Charlotte Bobcats are showing signs that they can be a good team. Raymond Felton scored 22 points, Emeka Okafor added 21 and the new-look Bobcats won for the fourth time in five games with a 95-87 victory over the New Jersey Nets on Friday night.

Sometimes it is not just the moves that are made, but the timing of said moves. This afternoon the Charlotte Bobcats waived 2 players, Andre Brown and Linton Johnson III. A few weeks ago this would have raised no eyebbrows. Teams were cutting their rosters down to the required 15 for the start of the regular season. Now, however, it is more than a little suspicious. There was a lot of trade talk surrounding the Bobcats, who have made all but public overtures to the New Jersey Nets and the L.A Clippers, and are openly shopping Gerald Wallace in their wish to land a true center to play next to Emeka Okafor. Now they have suddenly waived 2 players, taking their roster down to 13. Sounds like the Bobcats have a taker, and that in the deal they are getting back more players than they are sending out.

Mild mannered Emeka Okafor rarely raises his voice. Yet there is the Charlotte Bobcats big man in December, pounding his fist into his palm in a heated exchange with coach Sam Vincent at the end of practice. 3 months later, Okafor asked for a meeting with Vincent after his playing time diminished.

Emeka Okafor signed his 6 year, $72 million free agent deal with the Charlotte Bobcats Thursday and indicated he's excited to play under new coach Larry Brown. Okafor, who was a restricted free agent, agreed to terms on the richest contract in team history early Tuesday, after nearly a month of negotiations.

The Charlotte Bobcats finished a year of uncertainty with top rebounder and shot blocker Emeka Okafor Tuesday by coming to terms on a 6 year, $72 million deal with the restricted free agent.

Emeka Okafor was once offered over $12 million a season. Now, as stated by a source I consider credible, the Bobcats offer is much closer to a $10 million a season average.

Nearly a month since becoming a restricted free agent, Emeka Okafor is not close to a new deal with the Charlotte Bobcats. Yet GM Rod Higgins remains confident Okafor will remain a Bobcat. Higgins said Friday that talks have not reached a stalemate.

As if this Emeka Okafor situation will not get complicated enough already, I am informed by front office folk from 2 other NBA franchises that an NBA salary cap rule, base year compensation, makes it challenging to trade a restricted free agent for fair value.

As things stand now, Emeka Okafor will be an ex Charlotte Bobcat by the end of next season, if not sooner. Negotiations between Okafor and the Bobcats are at an impasse, an informed source informed the Observer, with the team offering less now than the $12 million plus annual salary it did a year ago.
