This how Boston should try and get Davis.

Trade heyward for Thompson and henson

Resign Irving and rozier.

At deadline trade rozier for expiring contracts and a pick.

In 2020 have Irving smart brown tatum and lots of cap and other young players sign Davis.

Irving won't wait 2 years for Davis.

Your scenario doesn't work. With Irving signing a max 70 million are spent on 6 players. Add the cap hold of 20 million for Brown and a cap of 120 million you only have 30 million for the remaining roster. With a cap hold of 2.5 million for 7 spots you'll have 13 million for Davis. Even if you resign the rights of Brown it will just be 27 million.

Never mind that Irving won't wait 2 years for Davis, Ainge won't wait either.
They would rather trade for Davis and try to convince him to stay. It would be much harder to convince him to come while competing with all the other interested teams when he's a FA.

I agree with JoeB, easier to convince a player to stay if he sees a good culture and opportunity than try to get him in FA. PG13 is a perfect example of this. Lakers tried to wait, he gets dealt to OKC, who no one expects him to re-sign with. He enjoys his time there and decides to re-sign.
