Instead of heading into the season surrounded by familiar faces such as Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd, Vince Carter must get accustomed to seeing Brook Lopez, Ryan Anderson and Chris Douglas-Roberts, the rookies, and Eduardo Najera, Jarvis Hayes and Keyon Dooling, the veteran additions, as well as Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons.

The New Jersey Nets acquired guard Keyon Dooling from the Orlando Magic in a sign and trade deal Monday. In exchange for Dooling, the Nets gave the Magic cash and the trade exception they got in the deal that sent Jason Kidd to the Mavericks.

Keyon Dooling, Orlando's top reserve off the bench last season, blasted the Magic for offering him their Bi-Annual Exception, a contract that could be worth $4.2 million for 2 years. Dooling, who made $3.5 million last season whilst averaging 8.1 points and 1.8 assists, summarily discarded the offer saying he was "insulted" by it.

The free agent names on the Nets' radar and atop their wish list were fairly consistent, Keyon Dooling. Eduardo Najera. Some who were up front are going elsewhere, like Mickael Pietrus and Roger Mason. And there were other names that were in the background. Yesterday, one of them came to the forefront, Jarvis Hayes.

His heart and his home are in Orlando, however Keyon Dooling maybe leaving both behind next season. Dooling is one of 6 Magic players who will become unrestricted free agents July 1, and also the one they would least like to lose.

Magic president Bob Vander Weide admitted that that addressing the team's hole at shooting guard is of the utmost importance in the summer. Maurice Evans, Keith Bogans and Keyon Dooling split time at that spot this season.

Though Stephon Marbury is not invited to the Garden, a number of free agent point guards in the summer will be, that included the Magic's Carlos Arroyo. The Knicks inquired about Arroyo at the trade deadline. Arroyo was thrust into the starting position Saturday in Orlando's 118-92 blowout of the Knicks because their 1st 2 point guards, Jameer Nelson and Keyon Dooling, were injured.

Isiah Thomas' top priority entering today's 3 p.m. trade deadline was adding a playmaking point-guard to their point-guard-depleted roster. A league source informed The Post the Knicks and Orlando discussed trades in recent days involving their 2 backup point guards, Carlos Arroyo and Keyon Dooling, however were in a stalemate.
