It is as if Lakers Coach Phil Jackson has become this mad scientist, relishing entering his laboratory to experiment with his test subjects. Subject No.1 is Lamar Odom, who started the Lakers' 1st 2 exhibitions however came off the bench in Sunday night's triumph over the Kings.

If Phil Jackson was going to be gun-shy about offending Lamar Odom after the minor flap that erupted earlier this week from his admission that Odom would come off the bench this year, it certainly did not appear so Thursday.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson remarked recently that he is thinking about making Lamar Odom the team's 6th man this season. The Lakers convened this afternoon for a media session before the start of training camp Tuesday and Odom voiced his disdain for Jackson's idea.

According to a league source, the Lakers already have contacted the Kings concerning Ron Artest and are thought to be offering forward Lamar Odom. As of Tuesday evening, the Kings had not returned the call. They expect to say on forward Kenny Thomas and his $18 million of remaining salary (over 2 seasons) being included in that possible trade.

Kobe Bryant loves the idea of teaming with Ron Artest and the Lakers have already privately considered taking a turn in the Ron-Ron funhouse. It only gets interesting if the Lakers are anxious enough that they will also take back a bad contract, Artest and Kenny Thomas for Lamar Odom, with minor cap-related tweaking of more bodies.

The Lakers' issue now makes the pieces fit with one problem position, small forward . . . where Lamar Odom must go with Andrew Bynum at center and Pau Gasol at power forward. Phil Jackson would like a shooter there badly enough to start his favorite Martian, Vladimir Radmanovic.

Lakers officials claim it was all however a done deal, Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown and Andrew Bynum for Kevin Garnett, upon pending approval by Minny owner Glen Taylor. That is when Kobe Bryant got publicly bent out of shape concerning the Lakers' supposed rebuilding methodology and deferral of title wave aspirations.

Pau Gasol went to the beach. Kobe Bryant spent time with his young daughters, going swimming and taking in a movie. Lamar Odom had taken the opportunity to "chill-ax". Those sound like normal enough weekend activities at this time of year, however not for key members of a team about to start playing in the Western Conference finals.
