The Magic are looking for a starting shooting guard. On Monday night they watched the player they let go after last season help beat them. Maurice Evans, who left as a free agent last summer, scored 17 points and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Orlando Magic 118-101 in the preseason opener for both teams. "(The Magic) did not make any attempt to re-sign me", Evans said.

Magic president Bob Vander Weide admitted that that addressing the team's hole at shooting guard is of the utmost importance in the summer. Maurice Evans, Keith Bogans and Keyon Dooling split time at that spot this season.

Brian Cook and Maurice Evans were in the visitors' locker room at Staples Center, happy to be back in L.A and also eager to be part of a less restrictive offense, they said. Cook and Evans are feeling their way through a different team and new surroundings since being sent to the Magic for Trevor Ariza on November 20th.

The LA Lakers traded forward Brian Cook and swingman Maurice Evans to the Orlando Magic Tuesday for forward Trevor Ariza. Ariza has averaged 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11 games this season, his 4th in the NBA. Last season, he averaged 8.9 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Magic.

An unusual scene, to be sure. All 15 Lakers were on the practice court, healthy, Sunday at the team training facility. Kwame Brown did not sit out due to his heel, Maurice Evans was not bothered by his back, and Lamar Odom felt no ill effects in his shoulder.

Ron Artest called it the worst place he would ever seen. Maurice Evans emptied his pockets to buy shoes for kids who were walking barefoot over the filthy ground. The NBA players, in Kenya to help feed children, quickly realized food was not all that was needed.
