76ers / Suns/ Twolves

Sixers get: Muhammad, Pekovic, Miami #1 in 2018(currently owned by phx, 1-7 protected).

Sun's get: Bennett, J Grant, Miami's #1 2016

Twolves get: Morris, okc #1 next year, and dump Peks horrible contract.

Why philly does it: Sixers get a scoring wing with a ton of upside in Muhammad, who is only 22. I realize the injury issues so far in his young career, but if healthy I think this guy can go for 18-20 a night in a year or two. Sixers can absorb Peks contract fo a few years, and it will be expiring right when Philly starts looking good to fa's finally. Have there own and Lakers #1, plus saric and hopefully embiid coming in next year, can afford to give up the other first rounders for a future first in 2018.

Why Suns do it: get 2 young forwards age 22 and 21 with food potential, plus a #1 pick next year. Good return for Morris and swapping Miami first rounders.

Why Twolves do it: get a excellent young pf to take some scoring pressure off of KAT. I think KG will keep Morris in line just fine. Plus, they finally rid themselves of Peks contract and get a late first rounder next year.

I like this trad r because it's well though out.

However Sixers will not give up two first rounder unless they get move of a return then Muhammad who is buried not eh wolves depth chart anyway. Yes we get a first but with zero garrenttee that pick even will be better then the Miami pick in 2016. I'd pass unless we only give up the Okc pick and grant and frankly that's not enough to get in the deal.

Shabazz and a first equals two firsts. So you have the Sixers trading Grant for Pek. Terrible.

20 Sep 2015 13:15:45
Tre: the Sixers are trading this year's Miami pick but getting back a future Miami pick. I like that because I really don't want 4 1st rounders this year and Miami is getting older and closer to the cliff. I'd be happy with the Lakers pick and the Sixers pick, Shabazz, and deferring the Miami pick into the future a bit.

Leuven: I think the Sixers do get a lot in this trade but I also think jvoug is counting Pek as a negative, not a positive because of his contract.

Tre is dillusiobal. He always disagrees with trades going it's too even, henkie only makes trades that are amazing for the sixers. Eve. Though sixers are constantly in the bottom.

This trade is not a "fleecing" and wasn't intended to be " one-sided". I think it's a solid trade for all three teams. And I am counting Pek as a " negative" for the Twolves, so its a "positive" for them to move his contract. However, one mans trash can be another mans treasure. I think Pek, with the uncertainty surrounding Embiid, could also help the Sixers, albeit at a high cost. And the Miami pick in 2018 is definitely better for the Sixers then the 2016 Miami pick. That will give the Sixers three #1's in 2018, a great spot to be in.

I wanted to give jvoug kudos for his last post, and this trade in general. He is completely right that the basis of a good trade is finding players that are "more valuable to you than us," because they fit someone else's situation better than their current team. Sometimes a player might have extra value to a current team because local fans love a player more, but in many cases they aren't a better fit at home than in one of the other 29 teams. I think he nails that concept in the last post.

Regarding the trade, there are two things that I find exceptional here. First, fans may disagree, but real teams care about the real money that they have to pay out on bad contracts. Teams have shown they will use an asset to move a bad deal, because these are businesses. I think owners get a bad rap when they do it. Second, I had not considered the idea of PHI trading a 2016 pick for a 2018, but that's a great idea. Teams like to be young, but with potentially 5 (if I recall) first round rookies next year, it can be hard for them to develop, since they need a few vets to go to the right spots on the floor! I love the idea of trading a 2016 pick for 2018.

As a fan of MIN, I would be unhappy to see Shabazz go, because he has legitimate star possibility. However, I can't deny he has more value to PHI (who has starter minutes for him) than MIN. The pricetag here is too good for MIN to realistically decline. They get a late 1st, turn Bennett into Markieff, and dump Pekovic's $36 mil.

If you get guff from other MIN fans, the only value I see wasted here is that you could send that cap to a team that could use it, and send MIN the bad contract and a young asset for it. But overall, if PHI is willing to pay this price, I think it's a great effort. Nice work.

Shrink: one of the big challenges for the Sixers is going to be figuring out what to do with all those picks. If Saric comes over and Embiid can play, that's 6 rookies at one time next season.

They need to try to do the Terrie Furlow thing. They need to try to get a future pick of a team that's peaking now and will be at trough level when that pick comes to fruition. BUT, once that pick happens, for goodness sake, just take Brad Daugherty and be happy.

Miami is a good target. They have a short window with the aging of their stud players.

BTW: Some of these protected 1st rounders floating around turn into 2 2nd rounders. The Sixers always seem to stay away from acquiring those types of protected picks.

21 Sep 2015 15:29:37
Right PhillyRich. They have done so much work in the draft, I have to review them. The Sixers could have four first rounders next season:

LAL top 3 protected
MIA top 10 protected
OKC top 15 protected
PHI's own pick

Plus two chances to upgrade those picks. They can get the GSW pick if it's better than the MIA or OKC pick in a pick swap, and could pick swap their own pick for SAC's. And like you said, if Saric and Embid can play - that's so much youth!

I think consolidating these picks for a better one would b a high priority, but NBA history shows that's a difficult task. Goal Two could be to defer that pick to the second half, by picking up a pick in future drafts, and I think that's possible.

BTW, I LOVE that MIA pick (top 10 protected this year, completely unprotected next season). I agree with you that the Heat are the type of team where they could have an injury or two and the doors could completely fall off. In fact, it happened to them before when Wade got hurt, and they finished with the worst record in the NBA.

Good luck - PHI has been the most interesting team in the NBA to watch from a GM perspective. Hopefully that will make them interesting on the court soon!

Agree Shrink. And I forgot about the flips. I'd bet a quarter the flip with the Kings works out for the Sixers. Not sure why. Just a gut feeling.

21 Sep 2015 16:36:00
HAHAHA, ok Shrink. So that injury season occurred almost a decade ago in which their second high scorer was Ricky Davis. And their next best player was a 35 year old Shaq who played under 35 games. Oh and they had PENNY HARDAWAY. I tend to believe an injury or two when you have Deng, Whiteside, Wade, Bosh and Dragic could be handled better. Your posts keep getting progressively more worthless. Good job.

21 Sep 2015 20:18:43
Yes Shrink, good job. I appreciate your appreciation of playing faux GM. Its much more interesting to have dialogue and constructive input instead of snarkish jackassery.

But actually I was thinking that if Sixers were able to swap the 2016 pick for the 2018 pick it would be more valuable because the Heat stars will be that many years older and more likely to break down. Plus it will come further down the curve for the Sixers.

Oh, point of fact: 33 year old Wade has missed about 50 games the past two years, and 31 year old Bosh missed almost 40 games last year.

Heck, Wade's only on a 1 year contract. If he breaks, the Heat might just let him walk instead of pay him $20+m again.

21 Sep 2015 21:06:20
I think this is excellent from all angles coming from a twolves fan. We even have and extra second round pick we could throw at philly for this year and one to throw at Suns next year to sweeten the deal.

21 Sep 2015 23:28:06
You can't be thinking the Kings will be worse than the sixers. Come on philly. Cousins rondo gay collinson koufus. Even if they blow up they will have an improved record from last year.

22 Sep 2015 13:05:42
Just doesn't really seem applicable to the situation. Bosh did miss almost 40 years last year. To a blood clot. He wasnt injured, he had an illness. It's not something that may be "reaggrevated" and besides last year, he has averaged over 70 games a season. Dragic, over 70 when he was playing in the NBA full time. Whiteside. healthy. Deng, over 65. Wade is a health risk, he's past his prime, and while he can add on the court, the heat aren't expecting much. that's why they were so hesitant to give him more than a year.

There would have to be some substantial breaks from the normal to think that all the normally healthy guys suddenly arent. Call it "jackassery" but trying to say it could happen, it clearly just did. a decade ago, with a team that had NO ONE else on it. eh, bad analogy.
