CHA GETS: Kevin Martin, Damjan Rudez

MIN GETS: Marvin Williams, lottery protected 1st

The MKG injury comes at the worst time for the Hornets, as they are establishing themselves as a regular playoff team. I like Kevin Martin here because he has starter-level talent (sliding Batum to the 3), at a time in the season when most teams are ambitious and won't trade starters. Martin can get his own shot. CHA was dead last in three-point shooting last year, which is horrible when you have Al Jefferson needing some space for his array of post moves - Martin is an excellent three point shooter. I also included Rudez who is a cheap $1.1 mil, 6' 10" and shot 41% from three point range last year to give them a bench option that seems to fit their requests. I also like that Martin can slide to the bench if MKG gets back late in the season, and he has experience thriving in that role in the playoffs.

MIN gets a non-lotto pick for Martin and frees up a roster spot. A pick should be valuable to them because they need value but does not have the minutes for a player with value. They gave up a future 1st for Payne. Finally, moving Martin means they have more swingman minutes for Wiggins, LaVine and Shabazz.

Take out Rudez and I think it's a good deal for everyone. Martin would be a great fir for CHA.

I considered something similar. But MKG signed a huge contract extention. Sending a 1st rounder away for a 1 year fix of MKG seemed like a lot to me.

But I see where your coming from.

I agree with you both. I included Rudez because CHA specifically said they wanted a big guy that could shoot three's, and since he's a SF/PF, there might be a few minutes for him off the bench. He's very cheap, and if CHA doesn't want him, the deal works either way.

I understand the thinking on Martin, on a good 1-year deal with a player option next year that he will probably skip since his contract is under value. I just imagine the CHA pick coming in around 22, so at that point you hope for (but not are guaranteed) a borderline starter. If you project them to be worse than this, say in the teens for more likely starter en that pick would probably be too much for Martin.

Thanks for the feedback!

top 12 protected pick for Charlotte to be willing to give it away, not sure if Minnesota would be interested in something so tightly protected though

If they're giving a 1st away I'd think it would be for something with promise. Martin and Kemba back court is just bad.

06 Oct 2015 23:18:22
I agree with the comments. Kemba and Martin would be a bad defensive backcourt and I'm not sure how hornets are interested in a fix for a good pick like philly said

Shrink. I was thinking of getting dieng on the lakers. What would be fair value for him in your mind. I know lakers don't have future pick assets if that's what the t wolves want.

TheKing, I like where your head is at. I could definitely see Dieng helping the Lakers, and I could definitely see the Wolves being willing to trade him - but only at the time when they know Pekovic can play, so it can't happen immediately. I think the plan is for Garnett to start the first and third quarter at center, and play some center at the end of the game. I was surprised his defense and passion is still so good, and he maintains good on court-off court numbers, so he helps his team when he's on the floor. Anyway, they will give minutes to Towns at PF and C, and if Pekovic can play 20-25 minutes a game, Dieng becomes a luxury that they can deal.

I think of Dieng as a guy who can start right now at center for about ten teams in the league. He has added value because of the position scarcity, his contract, health, and that he has some upside, but he will never be a top five center in his career. For me, that's a pick in the 12-18 range. You can get a starter there, and you might get a better player than Dieng, but there is a greater chance you get a bench player or bust.

At this point, it's hard know a specific position MIN will need, because of youth and injury potentials. Rubio, Wiggins and Towns are the core, and Garnett is locked in as a future co-owner. Pek probably can't be moved with his contract and health uncertainty, and one of LaVine or Shabazz is here - both Flip picks with great upside. Because they need to give their youth minutes to develop them, right now they can only ask for picks. You astutely point out the Lakers pick situation, so I would suggest a three-team trade, where the Lakers send out value to a team willing to give up a pick and send it MIN's way.

btw - breaking news here is that LaVine has beaten out K-Mart in camp, and coach Sam Mitchell has told him that the starting SG spot is "his to lose."

Martin was unhappy coming off the bench when he was with the 60-win Thunder, so I expect you may see him traded. Fortunately for Martin and the Wolves, there are several teams right now that can use a 20 PPG scorer that can get his own shot and shoot the three.

07 Oct 2015 03:27:37
It makes sense to start lavine and let him grow. Interesting to see what happens with Martin.

As for the lakers you said dieng has a value of 12-18 you say. You want the lakers to get that value from trade. Besides Russell and Randle and clarkson, they won't that value for anyone else. That's kind of the big problem. If Tarik black was 6 foot 11 I would've mind giving him more minutes. The best the lakers really could offer is Anthony brown (34 pick) 2016 second rounder(likely 30-40 range) Tarik black(can give a solid 10 minutes and a future second but I don't think wolves bite for that

07 Oct 2015 06:53:20
That makes sense. Clarkson is a fan favorite, the main reason to watch a Laker game last year. Randle was sold as the future last year. And Russell is the high lottery pick that fans want to see play. All three are probably more valuable to the Lakers than other teams, so not good trade candidates. And I don't see the other pieces enticing MIN.

07 Oct 2015 11:25:29
Um, Shrink, Garnett will be starting at PF, not center. Towns will start at center, with Pek and Dieng backing him up. Towns and Dieng might also see time at PF, depending on matchups.

And Lakers don't really have anything of value they would be willing to trade that would interest to Minnesota.

07 Oct 2015 13:31:37
Carl, I suppose what you are saying about Garnett is true, but he is also a PF/C, and he will be on the floor at the same part of the games as Towns. It's getting more positionless, but who either defend will be determined by match-up.

To be clearer, MIN has only one player who is exclusively a center - Pekovic. Their C-PF's are Towns, Garnett and Dieng. You can also see PF minutes go to Bjelica, Payne, and Shabazz in smallball. If Pek and Bjelica play a lot, they will force the PF-C's into complimentary "positions."

It will take some getting used to for MIN fans, because there are two changes going on here for them. The NBA is moving away from positions to match-ups, and MIN specifically is not used to having so many players who can play multiple positions!

07 Oct 2015 16:26:10
Garnett is going to be 5th in the center rotation. Only way he plays center is there are multiple injuries and foul trouble. He is not going to be playing in garbage time. That will be Dieng or Payne.

Only way Garnett plays center is if Pek injured, Dieng gets injured during a game, and Payne is inactive. That's the only way.

07 Oct 2015 22:45:07
One of the things that might make the original deal more fun is if the pick is lottery protected for 2016, otherwise it becomes a second rounder.

That way, CHA only pays if Martin helps them make the playoffs.
