Houston Rockets forward Shane Battier practiced with the team for the 1st time on Tuesday, but Ron Artest and Yao Ming missed the workout after leaving Monday's win over Oklahoma City with sprained ankles. Tracy McGrady also practiced on Tuesday after re-aggravating his sore left knee in Monday's game.

Since acquiring Ron Artest in the offseason, the Houston Rockets have talked boldly about contending for the NBA championship. They have a lot of improvements to make before that happens. Yao Ming had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Artest added 16 in his Houston debut, and the Rockets overcame poor shooting to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 82-71 Wednesday.

Like Boston last season, the Rockets assembled a "Big Three" of their own by acquiring Ron Artest to join Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. Artest, who averaged 20.5 points with Sacramento last season, adds toughness, versatility and a 3rd scoring option the Rockets have lacked since McGrady arrived in 2004.

Ron Artest hurried to the Sacramento locker room after scoring 13 points in the Houston Rockets' 95-90 win over the Kings in a preseason game Friday. Artest never got to properly say goodbye to his teammates after he was traded from the Kings to the Rockets in August. 3 hectic months later, it was finally time for the handshakes and hugs.

Rick Carlisle sounds much more relaxed these days. The former Pacers coach spent much of his time in Indiana answering questions about Ron Artest and the team's chronic off the court problems and injuries. He went from leading the Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004 to getting fired following the 2006-07 season after the Pacers missed the playoffs.

Ron Artest gave Houston fans an early glimpse of what he brings to the team. Artest scored 12 of his 15 points in the 1st quarter of his Rockets debut, and Houston beat the Memphis Grizzlies 96-93 Tuesday in its preseason opener.

The Houston Rockets, buzzing about the arrival of Ron Artest, already have injury concerns with Tracy McGrady. Houston's leading scorer mentioned Monday that his left shoulder is arthritic and will require surgery after this season.

Ron Artest decided to share his thoughts with numerous media members on today's controversy surrounding Josh Howard, the Dallas small forward whose latest transgression was an unpatriotic rambling concerning the Star Spangled Banner at an Allen Iverson charity event in July.
