Lou Williams scored 27 points and Thaddeus Young added 21 to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the NBA champion Boston Celtics 98-92 Wednesday in the exhibition opener for both teams. Williams was 7 of 12 from the field and 12 of 13 from the line. Leon Powe led the Celtics with 12 points and Tony Allen had 11.

For the NBA champion Celtics, free agency starts today with James Posey as the primary focus. Most other personnel matters will be handled after Posey's situation is settled. One move was made last night when the franchise failed to make Tony Allen a qualifying offer, thus making the guard an unrestricted free agent, as stated by his agent, Mike Higgins.

Coach Doc Rivers mentioned Allen was only supposed to go through the 1st part of practice Tuesday, however he was jumping and dunking.

Tony Allen has struggled on the way back from major surgery on his left knee, falling into uncertainty at times as to its strength. Now he is dealing with the knee and a bruised back and, of some significance, the fact he will be a restricted free agent when this season ends.

The Celtics have until the end of this month to sign Tony Allen to a contract extension, and Paul Pierce thinks it might behoove the club to get on it. "Yeah", mentioned Pierce with a smile, "they would better do it right now because he could be worth a whole lot more if they wait until after the season".
