Minnesota-Detroit

Detroit gets no 1 pick and James Johnson
Minnesota gets no 7 pick, Sekou Doumbouya, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, and Detroits 2021 1st round pick (top 3 protected, unprotected in 2022).

I think there are two tiers before you get to 7 (1-3, 4-6), so it should take something significant to get to the #1 spot. In this trade, DET a gives up something significant - maybe too much.

I think this comes down to what a GM thinks of Ball, of what he will become, and what it would mean to a franchise over the next four years for putting butts in the seats. I personally wouldn’t give this much if I was DET, but I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility. Maybe MIN throws something back, like Spellman, Okogie, or #33.

Rumors say that Detroit is seriously hooked on drafting on Patrick Williams. No reason to trade up.

This seems reasonable for both teams from a value perspective. I’m sure the Wolves would be happy including Spellman if the Pistons wanted him, but no way they include Okogie or #33.

What I don’t understand is why the Pistons would do this strategically. They don’t really have anything to build their future right now. Getting the #1 would give them one corner stone, but losing next year’s #1 would mean they would have to wait two years to add a second. Trading Blake or Rose would bring some value, but I don’t see a team giving up a 1st given their age, injury history and Blake’s contract. I could be wrong. None of their young players have really proven they will be starters on a good team at this point.

I really think they need to embrace the suck for a few years. I know how little fun that is. I’m a Wolves fan. I just think it is where the Pistons are right now.

The Pistons were initially linked to loving LaMelo Ball, and they went and watched him work out a few days ago. I think Ball would help their attendance (when we get fans back in the stands), with flashy plays between the mistakes. Derrick Rose, the ex-young superstar, would be an ideal mentor for Ball, at least until he gets dealt before the trade deadline

And I have no worries that DET will lose games and get a high lottery pick when they give Ball the rock. Rookies are almost always bad, and I think Ball could be extremely bad his first year or two.
