hawks trade trae to raptors who may be able to defend around his weaknesses

hawks: nembhard, gary trent jr, salary filler from raps, 2023 CLE 1st via Pacers, 2025 1st Pacers, 2029 1st Pacers, 2026 Raptors 1st

raps: trae young, chris duarte

pacers: scottie barnes

Trae isn't ideal for developing players raptors have needed more half-court juice. Raptors give up on barnes development for a better fitting player.

Hawks get nembhard who can be backup pg and play some sg. Trent is a good young scorer and they get picks going forward. team is tired of trae and they're terrible defensively.

Pacers get scottie barnes who can play point foward and develop next to haliburton who will use him as a secondary creator. Turner gives him a stretch 5 to allow him to be effective early on. Pacers get better defensively and have a good young core

young is the very definition of a player the Raptors would never sign or trade for. Raps would need to find a new coach to start with, because Nurse's defensive schemes require good defenders at all 5 spots. It would also require Masai and Bobby to do a 180 on their philosophy of building a team that starts with exceptional defense. I wouldn't say there is not some reasonable value in your proposal, but it is one that Toronto would not even consider.

The Pacers are stealing value. How do they get Barnes for a bunch of spare parts? I'd argue Scottie is the best piece in that trade aside from Trae.

so the pacers should be giving 4 unprotected picks nembhard and duarte? stylistically having a bunch of switchable tall guys hasn't worked out the way toronto wanted. While I personally wouldnt trade for young I can see how it may make Toronto better. They also did change their strategy in pursuing a traditional center at the deadling (Poeltel or however you spell his name)

Now that I look at the trade again, I realize the Pacers aren't stealing value. They are giving up a significant amount.
