The honeymoon ended a while ago for the defending champions. Kobe Bryant described the Lakers as "upset" and "a little edgy," supporting his descriptors with a series of curt answers to reporters' questions. Asked if he was feeling better a day after stomach issues forced him to miss the team bus to Amway Arena in Orlando, Bryant said, "I'm getting a stomach virus now with all these questions." The Lakers all seemed a bit queasy after losing three consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 23-27, 2008.
Forget LeBron James, Knicks fans. Focus on the possibility of reuniting Atlanta Hawks forward Joe Johnson with Mike D'Antoni. While the free agency rumors concerning James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have nearly crashed the Internet, Johnson has received far less scrutiny. Flying below the surface fits Johnson's low-key demeanor. But it also raises the question of whether he is willing or able to play the role of savior for an intense fan base that has endured basketball indignities for several years. The Hawks are expected to try to retain Johnson. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls and possibly the Los Angeles Clippers loom as potential suitors.
With Lowry, 23, to be a restricted free agent this off-season, his value has been at least as conspicuous when he was out as when he played. Lowry sounded likely to be torn between his fondness for his place with the Rockets, sharing the point guard position with Aaron Brooks, and "a goal" to be a starter and full-time playmaker. "I want to be in the best situation for me and to win," Lowry said. "I think Houston would be a great home. I wouldn't mind being with the group of guys and the organization is one of the best."
The Orlando Magic's Matt Barnes is looking for a multi-year deal, but will he find it with his current team? Barnes, who celebrates his 30th birthday today, has done a lot of hoping during his career. He's played for seven teams, but the longest he's ever stayed in one city was two seasons with the Golden State Warriors. Maybe now we know why the Magic starting small forward plays like he has a chip on his shoulder. It's because he does.
